Quinta do Lago and Central Algarve

Quinta do Lago South

Design: William Mitchell

A favourite among European Tour Professionals, this golf course received a €9 million upgrade in 2020, including improvements to the original William Mitchell design and renovation of all tees, fairways, green aprons and bunkers. The most famous hole of Quinta do Lago South Golf Course - and one of the most photographed of the Algarve - is No.15, a memorable Par 3 requiring a 200m shot over a lake from the championship tee, onto a green surrounded by pine trees.

Quinta do Lago North

Design: Beau Welling

Recently redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling, in close collaboration with European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, the new layout focuses firmly on precision and strategy. There are four magnificent Par 5’s but the most spectacular is Hole 12, featuring a lake on the left side that runs along the fairway until just before the green.

Quinta do Lago Laranjal

Originally an orange grove, which gave the course its name, this course provides golfers a completely distinctive experience. Its narrow fairways and well-defined greens require full concentration and accuracy. It is worth noting that Laranjal is environmentally friendly: its lakes are an integral part of a sophisticated drainage and irrigation system, and the only construction is the Clubhouse, designed to seamlessly blend in with its natural surroundings.

Quinta do Lago Pinheiros Altos

Design: Ronald Fream and George Santana da Silva

Offering an original design and layout, made up of a combination of three nine hole courses, Pinheiros Altos is known for providing an exciting challenge due to its well-placed hazards. Its signature hole is the island green 8th hole in the Olives (blue course) although experts will tell you that the 8th in the Corks (yellow course) is likely the most difficult Par 5 in Portugal.

Ocean - Vale do Lobo (11 mins)

Opened in 1968, The Ocean golf course features undulating fairways, along a nature reserve that slopes gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. In a privileged location, players will enjoy some of the most emblematic views of the Algarve, with the hole15 fairway running along the beach.

Royal - Vale do Lobo (11 mins)

Design: Sir Henry Cotton and Rocky Roquemore

Opened in 1997 and also designed by Sir Henry Cotton and Rocky Roquemore, the Royal Golf Course boasts undulating fairways, set in an absolutely stunning landscape. This is one of the most photographed golf courses in all of Europe and one of the most prestigious golf courses in Portugal.

Vila Sol - Quarteira (19 mins)

Opened in 1991, the course at Vila Sol, located close to the main tourist attractions in Vilamoura, was designed and maintained with a focus on preserving the course’s natural environment, providing an idyllic setting. It also has a 9-hole golf academy which is perfect for training and individual or group lessons.

Vilamoura Laguna - Vilamoura (25 mins)

Opened in 1990, this golf course is known for offering a distinctive experience in Vilamoura. It is set in low-lying coastal terrain that demands precision. The course also stands out for having several holes that feature the characteristics of a links layout.

Vilamoura Millennium - Vilamoura (25 mins)

Opened in 2000 and originally conceived as an extension of the 27-hole Old Laguna Course, this golf course, surrounded by a pine forest and several water hazards, present interesting challenges for even the most experienced golfers. To take a break from golf, players can take advantage of the proximity of the Vilamoura Marina and visit the well-known bars and restaurants and enjoy the pleasant atmosphere.

Vilamoura Pinhal - Vilamoura (25 mins)

Design: Frank Pennink and later upgraded by R.Trent Jones Jr.

Opened in 1976, this pleasant course runs through a pine forest and one of the most striking features is that the fairways are flanked by the Umbrella and Atlantic pines typical of the region, requiring a focused and narrow game. The greatest difficulty of the course is also the pine trees that line the fairway and are also very close to the greens.

Vilamoura The Old Course (25 mins)

The second oldest course in the Algarve, affectionately known as the "Old Course", was designed by Frank Pennink in 1969 and completely renovated in 1996. It is an iconic course known around the world and those who have had the privilege of playing there say it is an absolutely unforgettable experience. The course winds its way through impressive pine trees - the main hazards - over natural, gently undulating terrain.

Vilamoura Victoria - Vilamoura (25 mins)

Architecture: Arnold Palmer

Inaugurated in 2004, the Victoria Course is laid out over a virtually flat 90 hectares, making it the longest 18-hole golf course in Portugal. The carefully designed bunkers and well-placed waterfalls make the Vilamoura Victoria a stunning course for playing golf all year round.

Eastern Algarve

Castro Marim (50 mins)

Design: Terry Murray

Opened in 2001, Castro Marim is located near the historic town of Castro Marim which is a 15 minute drive from the Spanish town of Ayamonte. The course runs through undulating hills dotted with pine trees and offers amazing views of the Guadiana river.

Quinta do Vale (50 mins)

Design: Severiano Ballesteros

Situated on the banks of the Guadiana River, in a natural border setting with neighbouring Spain, this 18-hole golf course has a refreshing layout where the creativity of the great Severiano Ballesteros is felt throughout the course. It's a pleasant but challenging course, long, with wide fairways and tricky greens.

Benamor (40 mins)

Design: Sir Henry Cotton

Opened in 2000, the Benamor course, just a few kilometres from the picturesque town of Tavira, was the course that launched golf in the eastern Algarve. Set in predominantly undulating terrain, it offers impressive views of both the Atlantic and the interior of the Serra do Caldeirão and is located in a resort free of buildings. Possibly unique in the Algarve.

Quinta da Ria (50 mins)

Design: Rocky Roquemore

An 18-hole golf course, inaugurated in 2002, situated in the heart of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where, in addition to the magnificent views of the sea and Cacela Velha beach, nature reigns supreme. There are thousands of carob and olive trees all over the course, as well as the famous lake island on hole 17. The biggest challenges come from the lakes found in holes 10, 14 and 17.

Quinta de Cima (45 mins)

Design: Rocky Roquemore

Opened in 2002, Quinta de Cima is the sister course of Quinta da Ria. It was designed to be the Championship course and has already hosted several tournaments on the European professional circuit. It stands out for its challenging fairways that run through land dotted with carob trees, olive trees, bunkers and streams.

Monte Rei (55 mins)

Design: Jack Nicklaus

Opened in 2007, Monte Rei is consistently rated as the best golf course in Portugal. Monte Rei golf course offers everything a discerning player would expect from this international golfer and acclaimed designer with stunning views as the perfect backdrop. The luxury service includes valet parking and cart in the green fee.

Western Algarve

Boavista (55 mins)

Design: Howard Swan

Near the charming town of Lagos, Boavista offers two distinct sections of play providing a variety of attractive and interesting holes. Boasting views Umbrella pines, blossoming almond, fig, palm and olive trees line the rolling fairways, weaving their way between water hazards and carefully placed bunkers.

Faldo - Amendoeira Golf Resort (40 mins)

18 Holes | Par 72
Design: Sir Nick Faldo

Located near the town of Alcantarilha, adjacent to the O’Connor course, Faldo opened in 2008 this course was designed with strategic play in mind. This course demands careful positioning to score well. It makes for a challenging game, amidst a setting of rare beauty, with rocky outcrops, local oak and cork trees and desert-like cacti.

O'Connor - Amendoeira Golf Resort (40 mins)

Design: Christy O'Connor Jr.

Near the town of Alcantarilha, next to Faldo course, O’Connor opened in 2008. Beautifully set in a lush valley, the exotic palm trees give it an oasis-like feel. Its numerous lakes and watercourses make the course particularly challenging, and require a skilled and accurate game.
